ON THE BOARDS: An active family of four has a bold sense for design. We are developing concepts for a custom dining table that explores how form and material BECOME an everyday celebration of eating together.

ON THE BOARDS: The client is as much of a maverick as the original visionary of this 1961 experiment in living large on a small footprint.

Problem is: how to bring this gem back to life without compromising its intentions, while also upgrading its energy efficiency? By self-imposing a few simple rules, we are working with her to find the right balance, exploring the options more thoroughly with a feasibility study.

ON THE BOARDS: Design for a new entry courtyard is brewing for this former speakeasy mansion. The clients of this graceful 1930′s home are looking for an equally graceful entrance courtyard, creating a new 3-car garage, open breezeway and well-appointed foyer/mudroom. Our proposal does that and more, taking into consideration the home’s existing material palettes and eccentric rooflines.

Madlab was engaged to envision a new charter school for a transit-oriented downtown location in Dover, NJ. The K-8th grade school will occupy the third floor of an 1800′s-era 3-story brick building in downtown Dover; with a ground-level daycare, health center and computer lab. The core of the charter school’s program revolves around the ground-level fitness center; incorporating physical activity and martial arts into the curriculum.

When the retail space next door became available, we worked with Sharon to expand the concept to twice its original size; added a cool room for high-end and rare wines, a larger tasting table and cashwrap, and new graphics. The facade in the expansion space required historical review board approval, and returned a bad 1980’s design back to the building’s original proportions. Voted Best Wine Boutique Store, 2009 by New Jersey Monthly

Honorable Mention for Furniture, Annual Design Review: Bacterioptica breaks from design norms, a light fixture outfitted with petri dishes. Designed to be adaptive, not only in its form and mechanics, but more importantly, in the way it evolves.  Bacterioptica is not your typical chandelier, just as no family is a typical unit of interactions. Its on/off switch does not control it. Bacterioptica is alive. It grows. It is itself a household organism. It is living and breathing the same air and bacteria we are.

When our clients moved into the Sheephill Residence with their two young daughters, they looked past the roughshod camping retreat turned-home’s worn exterior and dark cramped rooms. They saw the potential in the place; the beginning of a legacy home for their young family.

This remodel and expansion of an existing 1-1/2-story structure into a 3-story residence includes completely new interiors, sensitive consideration of site and materials, and active client involvement in construction.

The small, closed rooms of the kitchen and dining areas in this 60′s era home were opened up to allow for a modern family’s informal lifestyle. New skylights brighten up the living space, while a two-sided fireplace connects the dining and living areas. Lots of storage, updated bathrooms, an entirely new kitchen, and a garage conversion to rec room finish off the renovation.

At Le Vigne’s center is a massive assemblage of tables, drawers, lids and legs that collide like the tectonics of Italy’s complex geology – the same rich geo-morphological terroirs that produce the shop’s amazing artisanal wines. This 25-ft long, ultra-white unit displays and stores wine in nooks and clusters, as if moving through Italy’s wine regions from north to south.
